Martin Hooper

Associate Professor Martin Hooper is an academic who balances his leadership role for the Science faculty with a strong interest in air quality research.

And for someone who is also head of the School of Applied Sciences for the Gippsland, Peninsula and Berwick campuses and associate dean (International) and co-director for the Gippsland Centre for Environmental Science, this is no mean feat.

Martin's work takes Monash's focus on engagement with communities to new heights.

Within Australia, he organises classroom debates with industry representatives on topics such as Australia's position at Kyoto and advises on key environmental issues in the La Trobe Valley, including the proposed new open cut coal mine. Internationally, he is science consultant on an AUSAID project supporting science education in Thai public universities, as well as a partner with CSIRO to investigate air quality issues in Bangkok.

Martin, who has been involved in teaching and research for 25 years, sees his new school structure as facilitating collaboration between the academic community and industry and government. "It also puts academic staff and students in an excellent position to do cross-disciplinary research," he said.

But it is working with postgraduate students that Martin finds most enjoyable. "It's rewarding working with students and watching them become experts in their fields. Then I can learn from them."

As for the future, he is looking forward to the boost the $1 billion federal budget promise will give to urban air quality research.
