Lyn Thayer

Lyn Thayer had two big ambitions in life. One was to be a nurse, and the other was to travel. But as finance officer in the Faculty of Education, Peninsula, her current career is far removed from what she had originally envisaged. Yet when she was appointed seven years ago, she discovered a liking for balancing budgets and has since progressed within the university.

Lyn's initial position within the Buildings Branch gave her the opportunity to meet people from across the campus. It was during this time, she said, that she first realised "the benefits of working on a small, friendly campus".

Three years ago, Lyn took up the position of finance officer, just in time to witness the restructure of the Faculty of Education.

"The change was positive in that managing the faculty's finances became more streamlined and strategic," she said. "Another benefit was the creation of a team environment so that Education faculty finance officers on the different campuses could work together, instead of in isolation."

Other inter-campus groups through which Lyn enjoys networking are the Administrative Support Staff Network (ASSN), which she describes as "tremendously supportive", and this year's intake for the Certificate IV in Business Administration.

Lyn's second great ambition, to travel, was finally realised when she lived and worked overseas recently. She is now happily settled back in Melbourne with photographer husband Guy and their two much-loved Abyssinian cats.
