Throughout
her academic career, senior law lecturer Dr Bernadette McSherry has used her
discipline to branch out in new directions.
In her student days at Melbourne University, Bernadette combined her law degree with an honours degree in politics. This enabled her to tutor in political sociology while finishing her law studies.
After working for some time as a solicitor, Bernadette was appointed associate to the then Justice Gobbo of the Supreme Court of Victoria (now Governor of Victoria.).
"He was an inspiration to work with," Bernadette says. "His community involvements taught me that there's more to life than the law."
She now makes her own contribution to community service with a weekly radio program for the print-handicapped, 'Talking law', on radio 3RPH.
Since 1991, Bernadette has pursued an academic career at Monash, where she is now associate dean, Teaching. During this time she spent two years in Canada undertaking her doctorate of jurisprudence.
Bernadette is a strong advocate of interdisciplinary subjects which, she says, "encourage law students to broaden their perspective". This is reflected in some of the subjects she teaches, including legal issues in bioethics, and psychiatry, psychology and the law.
Practising what she preaches, Bernadette is currently studying for her graduate diploma in psychology. She says that being a student again has helped her be a better teacher.
And to regain a sense of calm away from the flurry of academic life, Bernadette is an advanced practitioner of tai chi.
