From
the time she was in high school, Dr Kate Smith knew she wanted to be an academic
and in her current role as a senior lecturer in the School of Business Systems
in the Information Technology faculty, she continues to pursue that goal.
At Melbourne University, Kate studied maths, statistics and science as well as undertaking a PhD in electrical engineering. Since her arrival at Monash in 1996, however, she has turned her focus to information technology.
Kate not only teaches and supervises postgraduate students and undertakes research, she has also published her first book. Much of her work concerns a new specialisation known as data mining, using advanced techniques to discover hidden patterns or relationships in data.
A related area of Kate's research is neural networks for industrial applications. She has established a collaborative relationship with the University of Seville on the topic, and was recently awarded a prestigious ARC International Researcher Exchange Award to develop the collaboration further.
Kate also finds time to learn the cello, an interest she shares with husband Bill Miles, a lecturer in the Music department.
