Hiew Pang Leang

As a Malaysia-based academic who has also worked at Clayton, computer science lecturer Dr Hiew Pang Leang's work experience reflects the influence of globalisation.

Hiew earned his first degree in computer science, later obtaining an honours degree in electrical and computer systems engineering. He was subsequently offered a scholarship by the then Department of Computer Science at Clayton to pursue his doctorate degree, which he recently completed.

While working towards his PhD at Clayton, Hiew also lectured in computer science and programmed systems for the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering. He is currently course coordinator for the Bachelor of Computer Science degree at Monash's Malaysia campus.

Reflecting on his experiences at the different campuses, Hiew said that while infrastructure and support systems were more advanced in Australia, the smaller size of the Malaysian campus had made it easier to get to know people.

"Working on a smaller campus has also given me the unique chance to multi-skill in non-traditional areas such as staff training and IT support", he said.

Hiew strives to maintain a balance between work and family and, when time permits, enjoys travelling.
