Dr Michael Wyndham Evans was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by the chancellor, Mr Jerry Ellis, at a recent graduation ceremony.
Dr Evans, currently head of the mathematics department at Scotch College and convenor of VCE Mathematics, has made an outstanding contribution to mathematics education in Australia.
He graduated from Monash with a Bachelor of Science honours degree in pure mathematics in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in pure mathematics in 1973.
Dr Evans has been instrumental in setting trends in Victorian secondary school mathematics, has published widely, particularly in the area of mathematics enrichment programs, and is a member of the Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee.
His outstanding professional achievements are derived from a rare combination of complementary endowments. He is a leading educator as well as a highly competent research mathematician who has maintained original research within a fundamental area of mathematics, namely algebra and discrete mathematics.
