Sharon Fitzgerald's rise from part-time computer systems officer to IT coordinator for the Faculty of Education reflects her enthusiastic and innovative approach to her 17-year career at Monash.
Sharon obtained a degree in mathematics from RMIT before securing her first job in a bank. Seeking a change, she came to work at Monash while studying for a diploma in education. Although she never actually taught in a school, her diploma has nevertheless come in handy for staff training.
Sharon has many feathers in her cap. She started DeptSupport, which was the forerunner to the Technical Working Party (TWP), was the first chair of the TWP, participated in the first intake of the Women in Leadership program and was involved in organising the university's inaugural IT conference. Under her direction, the conference has since flourished and now includes an international focus on flexible learning.
For her achievements, in 1998 Sharon was awarded both the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Exceptional Performance by General Staff and the Caroline Chisholm Travelling Fellowship.
Sharon is also the first person in Education to access the 48/52-week policy, which helps her balance her work and family commitments. "I appreciate the faculty's support and flexibility," she said.
