Associate
Professor David Murphy is well known at Monash for his key role in promoting
flexible learning. His appointment to the Centre for Higher Education Development
(CHED) 18 months ago reflects the push for more innovative approaches to teaching,
an area in which he has long been interested.
Originally from Tasmania, David studied maths before going into teaching. While working for TAFE Tasmania in the 1970s, he became head teacher for external studies and has been involved in distance education ever since.
David took the plunge of a two-year contract with the Educational Technology Unit of Hong Kong Polytechnic, and ended up staying seven years.
In 1992, David moved back to Australia to develop a diploma of management for the Finance Sector Union with Deakin Australia, which remains a highly successful program today.
David returned to Hong Kong in 1994 to work at the Open University, and after living there for 11 years, says it feels like a second home.
Now settled comfortably back in Australia, David describes his current job as "helping Monash explore its potential for flexible learning", which includes developing guides, conducting workshops and introducing the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.
To relax, David plays the acoustic guitar and is an avid Rugby Union fan.
