As
divisional librarian for Berwick, Caulfield, Gippsland and Peninsula, Barbara
Jacoby enjoys the challenge of managing both print and electronic information
across several campuses.
Hailing from Nebraska USA where she was a teacher, Barbara's decision to do her masters in librarianship opened several doors, including a job offer in Australia in 1974.
Attracted to the idea of living overseas, Barbara accepted a position as lecturer in librarianship at the former Melbourne State College, then became a campus librarian for Lincoln Institute. An unexpected fringe benefit, she recalls, was easy lunchtime access to Albert Park Lake to train for the 1981 Big M Marathon.
Barbara later joined Monash's Biomedical Library, progressing to the position of branch librarian six years later, and in 1997 she was promoted to her current job.
Reflecting on her 14 years at Monash, Barbara said librarianship was a dynamic area and that she had found it extremely rewarding to work with staff across the various campuses.
Career highlights have included her visit to a Thai university in 1995 to help plan for their information needs, attending an AVCC University Administrators' course, and her regular attendance at the American Library Association Conference.
At home in Langwarrin, Barbara enjoys gardening and walking two golden retrievers. She has a daughter Lori and a granddaughter Georgia.
