At
just 22 years of age, Arts/Law student Jacqui Cameron's involvement with Monash
has given her experience far beyond her years.
Jacqui commenced her studies in 1995, and her keen interest and tremendous energy soon saw her taking on a variety of roles. These included acting as host for new students for four years, treasurer of the Monash Student Association in 1996, convenor of Monash University Federation of Student Organisations in 1998 and president of the Society of Arts Students in 1998.
Most notably, Jacqui has, since 1997, been the undergraduate student representative on Monash Council. Her appointment finishes this month, marking the longest term of service for an undergraduate student on Council.
"The greatest challenge of being a councillor is balancing the interests of students and the university, as tensions between the two inevitably arise," she says.
"But the crucial part has been learning about the people who make up Monash. Councillors must imagine where Monash can go and how it can get there under the right leadership."
For Jacqui, the highlight of her time on Council was the recent visit to Monash's Malaysian campus to see first-hand the positive image Monash is building overseas, a rare travel opportunity given her many commitments. With two law clerkships this summer and with plans next year to finish both her degree and a concurrent associate diploma at TAFE, her hectic pace continues unabated.
Jacqui spends her leisure time playing the piano and enjoying the company of her family and friends.
