WHO International Safe Community Designation

Monash University is seeking to become the second university in the world to achieve World Health Organization (WHO) designation as a Safe Community. Applying for designation is a robust and lengthy process in which the University will aim to meet the defined safe community indicators.

WHO Safe Community Designation, and the process for achieving it, has many benefits for the Monash Community, including;

  • Identification and acknowledgement of existing safety and injury prevention initiatives.
  • Review of current initiatives to identify successes, opportunities for internal collaboration, service gaps and vulnerable cohorts.
  • Opportunities to share expertise with others in the safety and injury prevention area, and learn from them in turn.
  • Enable Monash to meet growing sector expectations and community interest in student safety.
  • Enhancement of Monash's reputation to current and future staff and students.

Monash University already has many safety and incident prevention initiatives in place. The WHO designation framework and application process will enable us to strengthen what Monash is already doing and pursue, across the Monash community, a consistent, collaborative approach to further developing safety.
