Shared Services

In 2007 Monash University made a strategic decision to investigate Shared Services opportunities, and selected Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) across the University as the first area of study.  Three clear goals were established at the outset of the project:

  • To reduce cost through better utilisation of resources, improving efficiency by sharing capability across the University and the reduction in the duplication of services;
  • To reduce risk through ensuring the widespread and consistent use of current best practice and ensuring appropriate policies for security and continuity are in place;  and
  • To improve the quality of service by ensuring that services remain focused on business outcomes, that ICT groups have the resources required to perform their tasks, and to provide good governance on the prioritisation and use of those resources.

Following a competitive tendering process, KPMG were selected to work with Monash staff from Faculties, Divisions, Campuses and ITS to review the delivery of ICT at the University. The KPMG report made recommendations for changes to the governance and operational management of ICT, and proposed a programme of work, consisting of nine interrelated projects to transform the delivery of ICT services at Monash University. The Vice Chancellor's Group (VCG) and Strategy and Resources Committee (SRC) approved these recommendations in May/June 2008
