What does 'shared services' mean?

What will the project achieve?
The project has a triad of objectives, agreed by the Strategy and Resources Committee

  • Operational cost savings
  • Improved quality of ICT services and processes
  • Reduced Risk to the University

Will all ICT services will be provided centrally by ITS?
The project has commenced without a particular design in mind, but we do not expect that all IT services will be provided by one group. The review is looking at each stream of service provision for ICT, and may recommend a different model for the provision of help desk services compared with network management.

What is happening on the Project at the moment?
A Project current status page is updated reguarly, and you can also access archived status reports from this page.

What are the consultants doing on the project?
KPMG are providing specialist advice on assessment of current ICT services provision, design of a new shared services model, implementation and change management.

Will KPMG also be involved in the implementation of any changed provision of services?
The recommendations of the Project will be implemented internally by the University, but KPMG will retain an advisory role during implementation.

What other services will be included in the Shared services review?

Will this affect local support for my computer?
We don't know yet. Support for your desktop, laptop and other equipment and the IT support for staff and students is being considered as part of the total current service provision.

The project recommendations for where services can be provided better or more efficiently will be made in phase 2 of the project.

Will the project save the University any money?
Operational cost savings are one of the triad of Project Objectives, agreed by the Strategy and Resources committee.
