Advancing Indigenous Employment

Advancing Indigenous Employment Recruitment Process

The Advancing Indigenous Employment Policy (AIEP) and Strategy were approved by the Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University, Professor Richard Larkins, VCG and Senior Management Committee. The AIEP became operative March 2004. The AIEP provides placement for suitably skilled Indigenous candidates in positions HEW level 5 and below.

In facilitating effective Indigenous recruitment processes, on April 29 2005, the university, via Staff Services, implemented a new process where job vacancies HEW level 5 and below are initially provided to the Advancing Indigenous Employment Coordinator. The procedure is as follows:

  • The Coordinator receives a list of positions about to be advertised from Staff Services
  • The Coordinator reviews the list in relation to suitably qualified Indigenous candidates
  • The Coordinator advises Staff Services which advertisements are to be placed on hold
  • The Coordinator advises the advertising Faculties/Divisions that their job advertisements are being placed on hold
  • The Coordinator arranges an interview with the Indigenous candidate/s and the relevant Faculties/Divisions

Monash is fostering equality of employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians across all 6 campuses, and endorses the removal of any remaining employment and career enhancement barriers that exist within its employment structures. This new recruitment process will assist in implementing this vision.

The Coordinator will provide support and assistance to Indigenous candidates and all Faculties/Divisions (including Managers, Supervisors and work colleagues) in the implementation of this new recruitment process.
