Caring for someone with a disability

Welcome to the online Monash University Carer’s Kit – a resource to assist and support you in balancing your work and life responsibilities when you are caring for someone with a disability.

Balancing your responsibilities for caring for someone with a disability with your work commitments can be stressful and daunting. While the needs of people with a disability, their families and carers are obviously highly specific, the information contained in this kit is intended to provide you with a variety of information while you are providing care for someone with a disability. It includes sections on how Monash’s policies might assist you balance your responsibilities, how to access services to support in your caring role and to support the disabled person you are caring for, as well as information on transport, financial and social and support groups for both you and the person you are caring for. This resource is one of a range of Work Life and Family initiatives and tools Monash University provides to enhance your work and family experience.

Please note that this kit includes a range of information but may not have everything that you need. Also Monash does not formally endorse the organisations or services provided in this kit.

Family friendly workplace/Monash support for carers

Monash is committed to being an employer of choice for all staff. There are a number of policies and provisions aimed to support staff and students who are carers. The following links are for information and services provided by Monash.

Information on Monash’s policies on flexible working hours, home-based work, time in lieu and others may be relevant to carers planning how they will balance their responsibilities. Negotiable flexibilities in employment arrangements

The Monash University Enterprise Bargaining Agreements provide details on leave entitlements and other relevant information.

The Monash University Counselling Service provides professional and confidential psychological counselling services to all Monash students and staff.

The Employee assistance program is provided by an independent company providing free counselling to Monash University employees and their families.

The Work, study and family responsibilities policy provides the framework for the Work Life options.

Care and service provision for people with a disability

Supports and services for people with disabilities are available from a range of government and non-government organisations. They include government and authorities, service providers in the non-government sector (including for-profit and not-for-profit organisations), local governments, community groups, and a range of other community-based organisations.

The Local Government website has a search tool with links to all the local governments in Victoria. Local councils often provide basic supports through aged and disability services, such as:

  • Nursing care
  • Home delivered meals
  • Domestic assistance (e.g. cleaning, gardening, home modification and maintenance)
  • Personal care (e.g. showering)
  • Transport
  • Respite care
  • Counseling
  • Needs assessment

The Disability Services, Department of Human Services (DHS) website has contact details for metropolitan and rural Regional Disability Intake and Response Service branches which can help assess and plan for services required by people with disabilities, their families and carers as well as more general information on disability and services.

Disability Online provides information on how to access services for people with a disability, their families and carers. Provides links to specialist information and support groups (for example, Autism Victoria and the Muscular Dystrophy Association).

The Young People In Nursing Homes National Alliance is a national organisation that promotes the rights of young disabled Australians with high and complex support needs living in residential aged care facilities (or at risk of placement there), to have choice about where they live and how they are supported.

Centrelink

The National Welfare Rights Network is a network of community legal services that provides legal advice to individuals in relation to their interactions with welfare agencies such as Centrelink.

Victorian State Concessions are designed to improve the affordability of key services to pension card holders and low income households. Areas covered by State Concessions include energy, water and sewerage, municipal rates and transport.

Information and support for carers

Carers Victoria is a statewide organisation representing the needs of carers, offering direct services to support carers in their caring role, as well as education, training and advocacy programs to increase awareness of carers and their issues.

The Wellness Guide for Carers is a directory developed by Deakin University’s School of Nursing. It contains information and hints on:

  • how to live and stay well
  • where to find information on health-related topics
  • how to seek help from available community services.

National Respite for Carers Program includes information on centres that provide respite care, home based and emergency respite care.

Accessibility and Transport

Information on the accessibility of public transport in Victoria is provided by the Department of Infrastructure Public Transport Division

The Companion Card program promotes the right of people with a disability, who require a companion, to fair ticketing at Victorian events and venues by reducing the fares and admission prices for their companion.

The Multi Purpose Taxi Program helps Victorians with severe and permanent disabilities use taxis at an affordable rate.

VicRoads provides

Legal

The Office of the Public Advocate provides information on powers of attorney and guardianship.

Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Disability Rights page provides information on the legal rights of people with a disability.

Health information and community support

The Better Health Channel is an online health information and health practitioners guide.

The Association for Children with a Disability provides information, support and advocacy for families of children with a disability.

People with Disability Australia is a national disability rights and advocacy organisation. Its primary membership is made up of people with disability and organisations primarily constituted by people with disability.

The VicHealth website has Links to information and support services for specific health issues such as Autism Victoria and Diabetes Australia. 

The VicNet Disability Page is an online guide to disability services and information collated by VicNet, a community networking project of the Victorian State library. 

Infoxchange Disability News provides news and information from the community sector.

Information and services for people with a disability from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds

Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities Inc (ADEC) provides services, support and advocacy for people with disabilities and their carers from CALD backgrounds.

The Federation of Ethnic Communities Council Australia (FECCA) website lists contact details for all the Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs). Local MRCs provide services such as social support and information on culturally appropriate service provision and housing.

Information and services for gay, lesbian, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) people with a disability and their carers

The ALSO Foundation has several youth projects.

The Victorian Aids Council provides support and information for people living with HIV/AIDS and their families, partners and carers.

Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria provides a searchable database for articles on health issues affecting GLBTI people.

The Gay and Lesbian Switchboard provides telephone counselling, information and referral.

Deaf Gay and Lesbian Association is a peer support group for GLBTI people who are deaf:

The Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) represents the collective of all Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations around Victoria – contact details for these organisations are listed on the website.

The state government website, Victorian Koori Health contains downloads of Department of Human Services (DHS) data and policy documents and links to DHS web pages and other related websites.
