Staff Development

Staff Development promotes and provides learning and development programs and services addressing organisational and individual needs for academic and general staff. This includes:

Centre for Higher Education Quality (CHEQ)

The Centre for Higher Education Quality  provides advice, training and support for quality assurance and improvement in all areas including teaching and learning, research and research training and support services. Support is available in terms of individual consultations, presentations to groups, group training or the provision of print and online information. In particular, support is available to staff in terms of developing the planning, monitoring, review and improvement of their activities. Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching (CALT)

The work of CALT focuses on enhancing the student experience by improving the quality of learning and teaching.  To achieve this purpose, CALT aims to

  • provide leadership and strategic input and advice to the University with respect to learning and teaching
  • support improvement in key areas of learning and teaching identified through university monitoring and review processes
  • provide high quality support for students' language and learning needs,
  • prepare staff for their teaching role at Monash as a research-intensive, international university and support their professional development as teachers
  • engage in research activity that supports the above

CALT is committed to deploying its limited development resources in a targeted and efficient manner where there is data to demonstrate the greatest need so that it can effect the best outcome with those identified students and staff.  Details of both learning and teaching support, including information on the Graduation Certificate in Higher Education, can be found at http://www.calt.monash.edu.au/


Equity and Diversity Centre

The Equity and Diversity Centre (EDC) provides a range of training opportunities to support an environment for all students and staff, that is diverse and inclusive, fair and equitable, and free from all forms of discrimination and harassment. Information, staff development opportunities of various kinds and specific skills training are provided in the following areas:

Most training sessions can be tailored to suit the needs of individual work units.

Information Technology Services

ITS Training Office co-ordinates specialist IT training courses with external vendors for ITS support staff and on behalf of faculties (TWP).

Internal Systems Training

ITS also run in-house training programs for staff who support Monash systems such as CRUX, Monash Messaging Systems, AddHost.

Core IT Skills Training

ITS also assists staff and students to maximize the effective use of Information, Communications and Technology by providing a range of on-line training programs, accessible via the IT Training Channel on my.Monash portal.

The TeachMe product provides self paced, interactive training tutorials which cover common desktop applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project. There are also courses for Web page design (FrontPage and Dreamweaver).

The pre test tool, assists individual staff and students to assess their current IT skills by working through a series of multiple choice quizzes. These are presented as 8 modules, based on core ICT competencies. Results are displayed for end user access only and can be used to support individual training plans.

ICT Skills Matrix.

The Matrix assists staff to assess their current ICT skills, defined as "core" categories, with an online Pre Test and Assessment tool. Based on test results, staff can upgrade their IT skills, selecting from the range of online training products and face-to-face courses listed in the Matrix.

Integrated Administrative Systems (IAS)

IAS Training and Support Unit provides Training and Service Desk support for SAP and Callista users.  The Unit also provides SAP processing support for when SAP staff are away or unable to use one of their own resources. Training is delivered via CBT - Computer Based Training, Classroom sessions and one-to-one training, tailored to meet individual needs. Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE)

Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) offers a range of occupational health and safety courses to all staff, students and the wider Monash community.  These courses are designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to identify and control common hazards and health and safety issues that they may be exposed to during their work, research or study at Monash.  OHSE courses can also be tailored to meet the individual needs of departments in relation to the specific types of health and safety issues that they face.

Research Services

The University's Research Services Division provides the central administrative support for research and training at the University, and serves academics, research students, faculty and department administrative staff across all campuses. The Division is comprised of two major branches: The Research Office and the Monash Research Graduate School.

Research Office

The Research Office provides seminars and workshops on applying for research grants and fellowships, laboratory animal care and use, writing grants and ethics applications, software training for the annual research publications and data collection.  Support is also offered to academic staff on an individual basis through the provision of information about which grants to apply for, handling communications with granting bodies and all administrative procedures relating to grants, checking applications to ensure compliance with guidelines, and the provision of information on matters related to ethics.  In addition, the branch contributes to departmental or faculty seminars and, on request, provides workshops targeted to specific needs.

Monash Research Graduate School

The School coordinates a series of workshops and seminars through the exPERT program of employment and research training.  Workshop topics include intellectual property issues, thesis writing and examination process, preparing papers for publication, tutoring techniques, oral presentations, computer training and statistics.  While these workshops are arranged specifically with postgraduate students in mind, many will also be of interest to academic staff, particularly those who supervise doctoral and masters candidates.  Members of the school are also happy to speak to groups of academic staff on administration matters relating to doctoral candidature and scholarship support. University Community Services offers training programs for academic and general staff, and to organizations in the broader community, in the areas of personal wellbeing, interpersonal skills and workplace issues.
