Overview

‘Working with Middle Eastern Names' aims to familiarise participants with the names and languages of key countries in the Middle East.  The main focus is understanding the use, structure and pronunciation of Middle Eastern names, but the course also provides an introduction to the history and religions of the region, gives an overview of the Arabic language and clarifies common areas of confusion, such as the multiple spellings of ‘Muhammad' and the use of ‘bin', ‘al', ‘abu' and other words.

Course Content

  • An introduction to the "Middle East" region, explaining where its name comes from, which countries it encompasses and why
  • A detailed overview of the Arabic language, including pronunciation exercises, and an explanation of how Arabic names are converted into the Roman (English) alphabet and why so many different spellings are seen.
  • A part-by-part description of a classic Arab name, touching on the influence of Islam and the natural history of the region and an explanation of how the name is formed and used. This knowledge is reinforced by an exercise where participants put their own name into the Arab format.
  • Coverage of the structure, use and pronunciation of names from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran and Israel. Participants are provided with examples of common names and get the opportunity to practise pronouncing them. They also receive an overview of the history and languages of the countries covered.
  • A quiz to test and reinforce the materials covered in the course, which is thoroughly debriefed afterwards.
