Overview  - Coaching for Improvement (First half of day)

This course helps leaders conduct effective discussions and provide the feedback and ongoing support people need to improve performance.

  • Coaching process and how it relates to a performance improvement situation
  • Importance of addressing performance problems quickly and effectively
  • Discussion Planner to prepare a step-by-step approach for discussing improvement
  • Interaction Process - Key Principles, Interaction Guidelines and process skills - to conduct coaching for improvement discussions
  • STAR technique - to provide specific, balanced feedback to people working to improve performance
  • Importance of ongoing coaching, measurement, feedback and support
  • Feedback practice session using the STAR format

Overview - Coaching for Success (Second half of day)

This course develops leaders who help people achieve goals and avoid problems, a positive experience for themselves and those being coached.

  • Discussion of the three types of coaching
  • Benefits of coaching for success
  • Review of the coaching process
  • Effective and ineffective approaches when coaching for success
  • Interaction Process and how it helps the leader to balance 'seeking and telling'
  • Putting skills into practice - participants prepare and conduct a fictional coaching-for-success discussion using a Discussion Planner with practice rounds and feedback
  • Preparation time using a Discussion Planner for a real-life coaching-for-success situation back at work.
  • Importance of observation and measurement in identifying ongoing coaching needs
  • Importance of giving feedback using the STAR format
