Overview
This course assumes some knowledge and experience in working as an advisor/educator/consultant. Using case studies, it will review the stages of the process from initial assessment and clarification of expectations, the design and delivery of services, the handling of difficulties, and assessing the best method for achieving outcomes. Specifically included in the two sessions are techniques for introducing a particular product, service or process (eg Audit, Finance, IT or Records Management), and for working successfully as a central services advisor/problem solver building links and common practices across the university. Staff are encouraged to bring their own consulting challenges for discussion and potential use as case studies.
Intended Outcomes
- Increased understanding of the role, and the range of expectations often placed on advisor/consultants
- Clarification and understanding of the stages in the process of assisting clients to learn or change, and the common traps for consultants
- Skill development in applying the techniques relevant to each stage
- Skill development in the use of techniques appropriate for introducing or changing products, services or processes
Course Content
- Role of the internal expert/consultant and stages in the consulting process
- Techniques to apply at each stage of the process
- Skills of assessing, mapping, setting protocols, agreeing limits, outlining possibilities
- Negotiating acceptable/realistic expectations
- Designing and implementing successful processes
- Ways to work with clients so they learn new skills and techniques
- Problem solving and prevention
- Group techniques, including presentation and negotiation
Learning Approach
With appropriate case studies, the two sessions use a framework of consultancy to illustrate the application of the various skills and techniques relevant to each stage of the process. There will be opportunity for discussion and sharing of professional experience.
