Overview
University managers are often required to work collaboratively with others on projects or programs. Often, the people involved do not have formal authority for all the required actions of the project - yet are still responsible for the outcomes. This requires considerable leadership skills in what is variously called; 'influencing', negotiation, relationship management, communication and 'politics management'. If working with more senior managers and powerful stakeholders these skills become very reliant on the appropriate use of informal or personal 'authority for task'.
This one day workshop focuses on the practical leadership and influencing skills of university managers in the conduct of their daily work - influencing individuals, managing 'positive politics' and working with - sometimes around - difficult situations and people.
The workshop will present a practical framework, workplace tools and case studies.
Intended Outcomes
The workshop will provide frameworks for leadership and influencing in the workplace, identifying participant skills and preferred approaches to influencing and leadership - then applying these to develop practical strategies for influencing specific workplace issues.
Course Content
- Key definitions, principles, approaches and a set of skills for leadership, influencing and 'adult to adult' conversations in the workplace
- Identification and analysis of participant skills and styles in workplace influencing
- Framework and the development of a practical strategy for influencing and 'positive politics'
Learning Approach
This workshop is focussed on the day to day experience of participants and will utilise presentation of model and frameworks, with small group application to participant examples and case studies.
