Overview

This workshop focuses on the methods of translating the university's strategic plans into faculty/division/department/unit operational plans. It introduces approaches to measuring performance at an organisational and team level. The various university templates for planning will be used. You will be shown a planning methodology that enables operational plans to be developed and aligned to the broader university plans. The university framework and annual cycle will be followed and/or explained during the workshop.

Intended Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, you will understand the university's planning approach. You will also be able to use the various templates that are applicable to your own level of planning. The planning framework and cycle will be followed and you should create a part of an actual operational plan for your area. This may be limited to a draft contents page, however it is anticipated that you will have an understanding of how to then complete the plan proper.

Course Content

  • An outline of the strategic and operational planning processes
  • An approach to measuring the achievement of plans at various levels
  • Develop objectives for the business unit from the broader strategic plans
  • Develop metrics for each objective that link the objectives to the strategy
  • Develop an operational plan that includes specific results that link to the intended strategy and show how these help achieve the strategic intent of the Monash Plans
  • Use the Monash planning templates to document the operational plans
  • Activity reflecting on learning during the day

Learning Approach

This workshop will be of one-day duration. It will be mainly facilitated with group activities and exercises. Participants will be involved in plans for their own business unit as well as case study examples. These activities will use real-life Monash examples wherever possible. Generic examples will also be used to provide a balanced approach.

Handouts

A comprehensive set of workshop notes will be distributed showing all content areas as well as activities and exercises.
