Overview

According to Worksafe figures (2002) stress is the second most common workplace injury after sprains and strains. The word "stress" seems to be everywhere and we all know and have experienced some of its symptoms. But, without a workable definition of stress, or understanding of causes and processes, it is difficult to know how to minimise risk factors or to assist those who are experiencing stress-related difficulties. This course will focus on preventative approaches and strategies. Participants will learn what can be done to reduce the risk of occupational stress and how to respond to signs of stress and strain in staff.

Intended Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Learn about definitions and causes of occupational stress based on recent Australian research
  • Gain knowledge of how to prevent stress by tackling causes of stress
  • Improve skills in identifying and responding to signs of stress and strain in staff
  • Gain awareness of workplace issues which are hazardous to staff wellbeing
  • Learn about protective factors and workplace practices which can buffer staff against stress and strain
  • Develop skills in assisting staff who indicate they have concerns regarding occupational stress
  • Have greater awareness of services available to assist supervisors and staff
