Staff, honours and post-graduate students who work with biological materials. Preferably at least two people from each participating department.

Overview

This training is provided over one 2 hour morning session and is targeted specifically to the types of work and biohazards present at the University.

Intended Outcomes

Participants to have a thorough understanding of the requirements of AS2243.3 as well as Monash's policies and procedures for using biologicals for teaching and research purposes. Participants to have the opportunity to work through examples that relate to their specific work area during the session.

Course Content

  • micro-organisms and modes of disease transmission
  • standard precautions
  • principles of contamination and infection control
  • health and hygiene standards, incident management
  • responsibilities, biological safety cabinets and related devices
  • general precautions and equipment
  • sterilisation and disinfection
  • spill & waste management

Learning Approach

Lecture format reinforcing through the use of examples and discussion of local biological hazards and mitigation using Monash systems and the hierarchy of control.
