Overview

This program is designed to provide academic performance development supervisors with a sound working knowledge of giving and receiving feedback, and discusses the various techniques and strategies that could be utilised to manage difficult conversations.

Intended Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program academic performance supervisors will:

  • understand the importance of giving and receiving feedback in helping staff to reach performance and career goals;
  • be able to apply giving and receiving feedback techniques to formal and informal conversations with staff;
  • understand the importance of providing regular, fair and constructive feedback;
  • be able to provide upward feedback to their own managers; and
  • be able to confidently approach difficult performance conversations.

Course Content

Information includes:

  • preparing for positive and constructive feedback
  • questioning, listening and observing skills
  • dealing with difficult conversations about under performance
  • equity and fairness in discussing performance
  • having more ‘emotionally literate' conversations
  • phrasing feedback
  • creating a supportive work environment
  • coaching skills
  • enduring performance difficulties
  • working with very difficult workplace behaviours and
  • what to do when feedback fails

Learning Approach

The program will follow the format of group discussion and role plays.
