Overview

This one day module is aimed at staff involved in the selection process. Completion of this module is a requirement for staff who will serve as a chair or member of a selection panel at Monash.

This module explores contemporary approaches and issues associated with selection and outlines the key stages in the selection process at Monash University.

• An understanding of the importance of best practice selection
• Skills in the key stages of the selection process
• Ability to comply with Monash selection policies, procedures and guidelines and serve as an effective member of a selection panel

• Interviewing, particularly behavioural interviewing
• Effective interview questions
• Equal employment opportunity in selection
• Interview preparation, including structuring the interview
• Building rapport with candidates
• Common interview pitfalls and how to avoid them
• Reference checking
• Making a selection decision
• Making an employment offer
• Providing feedback to candidates

Learning Approach

This module utilises small group work, discussion and presentations to actively engage participants with the content. Participants are encouraged to share previous experiences and learn from each other. Learning is further supported by the use of a range of contemporary DVDs and presentations by Monash staff with selection expertise.
