University Staff who are currently engaged in purchasing activity of spend less than $200k.

Assumes participants have some background knowledge and experience in carrying out and managing the transactional purchasing process within the University, including using SAP (raising purchase requisitions and orders).

Overview

This program aims to build awareness to the University’s Procurement Framework and to provide participants with the appropriate knowledge in applying the University’s procurement policy, procedures and guidelines when engaging with external suppliers. The program will introduce participants to best practice procurement principles and equip them with the skills and practical tools necessary in delivering the most favourable procurement outcomes for the University.

Intended Outcomes

At the end of the program participants will be able to:

  • Apply the University’s Procurement Framework when undertaking procurement activities
  • Utilise the tools and templates that assist in the procurement process
  • Identify cost saving opportunities and how to approach the supply market
  • Evaluate supplier quotes by establishing criteria and comparing quotes
  • Implement basic category management principles and techniques in managing supplier relationships
  • Take into account environmental and socially responsible purchasing considerations when procuring goods and/or services

Course Content

The following topics will be covered during the program:

  • University’s Procurement Framework – background, policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Procurement Basics – what is procurement, who can purchase, what are the delegations of authority, commercial terms and conditions
  • Reducing Total Cost – cost models, impacts of the model, identifying opportunities
  • Obtaining and Evaluating Supplier Quotes – managing the process, setting evaluation criteria, evaluating multiple quotes
  • Category Management – introduction to category management, managing supplier relationships
  • Environmental Purchasing – what is the University’s policy, what is good practice, how to promote the message

Learning Approach

The program will be delivered using a combination of methods including theoretical sessions, case studies, group discussions and group exercises. This combined with the comprehensive course notes will enhance the transfer of learning to the workplace
