Getting Started

Read the DEST funding programme guidelines

Click on a link below to go to the DEST web page for the relevant funding programme.  These pages will have links to the funding programme guidelines and other relevant information.

  1. Collaboration and Structural Reform Fund

  2. Workplace Productivity Programme

  3. Capital Development Pool Programme

  4. Voluntary Student Unionism Transition Fund for Sporting and Recreational Facilities

  5. Support for Small Businesses on Regional University Campuses Programme

Familiarise yourself with the selection criteria

The above hyperlinks will contain information on key selection criteria.  It is vital that your submission addresses these criteria.  Click here to also read pages in this website relating to the above funding programmes.  These pages discuss key programme-specific focus areas that may not appear on the DEST website but are useful for a successful application.  Other general focus areas in addressing selection criteria are described on our Key Selection Criteria web page.

Review documents that analyse previous funding rounds

The pages within this website that relate to specific programmes also have links to Word documents that analyse the successful projects in previous funding rounds.  This will give you a good understanding of the types of projects that are attractive to DEST.

Ensure you are aware of the internal Monash deadlines

These will be earlier than DEST deadlines. Monash needs time for final review, approval and prioritisation before submission of applications to DEST.

Familiarise yourself with the total amount of funding available

This will prove useful in determining a reasonable amount of funding to request. For example, if $10 million of funding is available for allocation across all institutions, it would be unreasonable to expect a bid for $8 million to be successful in its entirety. Also looking at the analysis of successful projects in previous allocations (mentioned above) will give you an idea of how much funding may be realistic.

Consider who to approach for support of your submission

For example, would it be useful to contact the local MP or a State Government Dept (e.g. the Office for Higher Education).

Consider who else you may need to consult with

Consider what departments or institutions, inside or outside Monash University, you may need to consult with. For example, is it a project that may involve other areas of the university? Will it involve a direct or in-kind contribution from the university and if so who needs to approve this? Would your chances of success be increased if there was a collaboration with external institutions?

Who to contact at Monash
