Why build the John Monash Science School?

Science, mathematics and technology education are the fundamental building blocks for innovation, and through this, economic growth.

Major challenges in achieving the directions laid down in Growing Victoria Together are apparent in:

  • the decreasing numbers of students studying science, mathematics and technology at the secondary and tertiary levels;

  • a continuing shortage of qualified science, mathematics and technology teachers;

  • the difficulties many government schools in Victoria have in maintaining full and effective programs in the relevant disciplines at senior levels;

  • the continuing downward trend in scientific and mathematical literacy of Victorian students; and

  • the continuing need to develop and grow the essential skills base arising from the relevant disciplines.

The John Monash Science School aims to address these challenges by developing world-class and innovative pedagogy and curriculum that will engage and enthuse students and teachers alike and benefit their counterparts throughout Victoria.  Its establishment is supported by international and interstate experience that shows students studying in specialist schools achieve improved learning outcomes within the specialty and across the curriculum.
