Accommodation for new staff

Eligibility

The university endeavours to assist newly appointed staff arriving from outside Melbourne by providing temporary fully furnished rental accommodation in university flats or houses.

Charges

The incoming staff member or visitor will be responsible for payment of the rental as well as telephone, gas and electricity charges.

The university will pay telephone, gas and electricity accounts as presented by the authorities providing the services and amounts in respect of a member's period of occupancy will be deducted from salary or by invoice as follows:

  • telephone rental and cost of all calls as recorded in the Telstra account for the period; and
  • gas and electricity accounts as presented to the university. Where more than one tenancy has fallen within the period of any account, the amount will be divided as equitably as possible in proportion to estimated usage.

Responsibility for property<

No expenditure should be incurred on a leased property by the occupying member.

A member occupying university housing is responsible for any loss of property in the house and for damage other than fair wear and tear.

Period of occupancy

Occupants of university housing are requested to give as much notice as possible of their intention to vacate the premises.

In circumstances where the length of stay is such that short-term appointee cannot be given continued occupation of one of the university's flats, the housing office may be requested to assist in obtaining alternative accommodation.

If circumstances are such that a faculty or department considers that special accommodation should be made involving the university taking tenancy of a property, this can be approved only by application to the DVC Resources (or nominee). Such application will indicate who will arrange the necessary administrative and legal steps to be taken in connection with such a tenancy.

Procedures for booking

In most instances, requests for accommodation by the incoming staff member or visitor will be made direct to the university housing officer. The head of the administrative unit may make arrangements with the housing office. Where one month's notice of cancellation is not given a booking fee will be made.

All requests regarding bookings and other matters relating to charges and maintenance should be directed to the university housing officer, ext. 53156 located on the first floor, Union Building
