Advertising new Academic positions

General principles

With the exception of appointments of one-year duration or less, all academic vacancies are normally advertised externally.

Placing advertisements

For further information on writing and placing advertisements, please visit the Recruiting New Staff webpage.

Requests to advertise academic employment opportunities should be forwarded to the dean (or equivalent) using the Request to Advertise Form. The dean (or equivalent) then forwards the form to Human Resources Division. The advertisement text, position description and any other relevant documentation to be displayed on the Opportunities at Monash website for job seekers to download, should be emailed to adverts@adm.monash.edu.au.

Advertisements are processed weekly and the Request to Advertise Form should reach Human Resources Division by 11am Friday. Forms received after this deadline will be held for processing in the following week.

The text for advertisements should be no more than 500 characters (including spaces). Advertisements should provide a brief statement about the position and may include the essential skills required to perform the role. In addition the advertisement should indicate:

  • whether the appointment will be ongoing or fixed term, the fraction (for part-time appointments) and whether the position is casual or sessional (where applicable).
  • the designated campus to which the appointment will be made (this will also be stated in the successful candidate's employment contract). The possibility of transfer to another campus or requirement to perform duties at another campus may be included where relevant to the appointment.
  • the contact person for enquiries and receipt of applications.
  • a specific closing date for applications, which will be no less than two weeks, and in overseas publications, should be at least four weeks. An appointment should not be made to the position prior to the closing date of applications.

Please see the Recruiting New Staff webpage for more information on what to include in employment advertisements.

Placement of advertisements

Professorial and Associate Professorial advertisements

Vacant Professor and Associate Professor appointments are normally advertised in both the national and international press.

Professorial positions may be placed as single display advertisements.

Associate Professor positions are normally advertised as part of a composite advertisement. In terms of national advertising, Associate Professor positions are advertised in the Higher Education section of The Australian (Wednesday edition).

Other Academic advertisements (more than one years duration):

Employment advertisements usually only appear in one publication in order to contain costs, with additional publications allowed at the discretion of the head of school/department/administrative unit.

Level B and above advertisements (of more than one years duration) are normally advertised as part of a composite advertisement in the Higher Education section of The Australian (Wednesday edition).

Level A vacancies and vacancies of less than one years duration (if advertised) may be placed as part of a composite advertisement in the Higher Education section of The Australian (Wednesday's edition), or as a line advertisement or part of a composite advertisement in the higher education section of The Age (Saturday's edition). It is at the discretion of the school/faculty/administrative unit to determine the publication(s) in which the advertisement will appear.

Where applicants for academic vacancies are sought from outside academia, positions may be advertised in the relevant professional journal or section of the newspaper.

All academic vacancies are advertised on the Opportunities at Monash website, however those vacancies that are only being internally advertised will be accessible by current Monash staff only.

All costs for advertising, including agency production costs, will be charged to the cost centre specified on the Request to Advertise Form.

The Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs may require evidence of extensive advertising in Australia, at least for positions below Lecturer level, before a position may be offered to a person not holding Australian or New Zealand citizenship or a relevant visa (please refer to Immigration requirements for more information). Where labour market testing is required for immigration purposes, The Age and The Australian are to be used. (please refer to labour market testing for more information).
