Travel and removal costs
Travel costs for academic
The university will contribute towards the costs associated with travelling to Melbourne to take up a continuing or fixed-term "teaching and research" appointment of two or more years. An allowance may be provided on similar basis for a research only appointment subject to the availability of funding.
All costs will be charged to administrative units or administrative groups.
Allowances for appointees are:
From overseas:
- Cheapest available air fares by the most direct route for appointee, spouse and dependants accompanying them;
From within Australia:
- Either cheapest available air fares by the most direct route for appointee, spouse and dependants accompanying them; or
- If travelling by car, the appointee may elect to be paid the current university allowance for use of one private vehicle for travel by the most direct route to Melbourne.
A spouse and dependants will be deemed to accompany the appointee if they precede or follow within a reasonable period, which will normally be one year.
Removal costs for academic staff
The university will contribute towards the costs actually incurred in removing household, personal effects, library and the like for appointees taking up a continuing or fixed-term "teaching and research" appointment of two or more years. An allowance may be provided on similar basis for a research only appointment subject to the availability of funding.
All costs will be charged to administrative units or administrative groups.
The allowance for Level B (lecturer) or above is $A3000 for the appointee plus, where appointed from overseas or from a location within Australia distant more than 3000 kilometres from Melbourne, $A500 for each dependant, to a maximum of $A5000 in total.
The allowance for Level A (assistant lecturer)appointed from overseas may be up to $A1000.
The allowance will be available for a period of up to twelve months from the date of commencement of duties at the university.
Special circumstances for academic staff
A dean may, in special circumstances, authorise:
- contributions towards the costs of travel and/or removal for appointees who would not otherwise be eligible;
- payments above the limits specified.
- Repayment of travel and removal costs in event of early resignation
A staff member released from an appointment before having served two years or the appointment period, if special approval were given for travel and/or removal allowances to be paid for an initial appointment of less than two years under special circumstances, will be required to refund a portion of the travel and removal costs incurred by the university. The proportion to be refunded will be pro rata to the period by which service falls short of two years or the appointment period if the appointment is less than two years duration. The amount will be recovered by salary deduction.
Repayment of travel and removal costs in event of early resignation for academic staff
If the staff member's employment with the University is terminated prior to two years from the commencement date of the employment, the staff member will be required to refund to the University, a pro rata amount of the relocation expenses (including accommodation, removal and storage expenses) paid, based on the period by which the employment falls short of two years.

All costs will be charged to administrative units or administrative groups.
Allowances for appointees are:
- Cheapest available air fares by the most direct route for appointee, and accompanying spouse and dependants.
- Alternatively, if travelling by car, the appointee may elect to be paid the current university allowance for use of one private vehicle for travel by the most direct route to Melbourne.
A spouse and dependants will be deemed to accompany the appointee if they precede or follow within a reasonable period, which will normally be one year.

The allowance for an appointee at H.E.W level 7 or above is $A3000 plus where appointed from overseas or from a location within Australia distant more than 3000 kilometres from Melbourne, $A500 for each dependant, to a maximum of $A5000 in total.
The allowance for an appointee up to Level 5 or 6 appointed from overseas may be up to $A1000.
