Advertising new Academic positions

General principles

All academic positions of more than 12 months must be advertised externally i.e. at least on one online job board external to the University.

Print advertising is optional for any advertised role including all academic vacancies.

Recruitment Advertising Request

To make a request to advertise academic vacancies, please refer to the instructions and guidelines provided in the current Recruitment Advertising Procedures.

HR Operations administers the placement of all recruitment advertisements.

The documentation required to arrange for a position to be advertised comprises:

  • the advertisement text, in Word format
  • Duties Statement (Academic) in Word format
  • an approved Request to Advertise form; and
  • any other supporting documentation.

All documentation must be received by HR Operations by 5pm on a business day (Monday to Friday). Online advertisements will normally be active within 3 days after the request has been received, providing there are no redeployment considerations.

All recruitment advertising approval must be compliant with the requirements outlined in the current Recruitment Advertising Procedures.

Multiple appointments can be made to each advertised position at the same level.

Please see the Recruitment Advertising Procedures for more information and guidelines on what to include in employment advertisements.

Placement of advertisements

Professorial and Associate Professorial advertisements

Vacant Professor and Associate Professor appointments are normally advertised in both the national and international press.

Professor (Level E) positions may be placed as single display advertisements.

Associate Professor positions are normally advertised as part of a composite advertisement. In terms of national advertising, Associate Professor positions are advertised in the Higher Education section of The Australian (Wednesday edition).

Academic vacancies may also be advertised in the relevant professional journal or section of the newspaper.

Other Academic advertisements (more than one year duration):

Print advertising is optional for any academic role. If advertising in print, you will receive an electronic proof and costing details by email, normally by Wednesday afternoon in the week after you submitted documentation to HR Operations. You will need to approve the advertisement and cost via return email by 11am Thursday morning.

Employment advertisements for academic positions usually only appear in one print publication in order to contain costs, with additional publications allowed at the discretion of the head of school/department/administrative unit. Please note print is optional for all academic vacancies.

Where print advertising is requested, Level B and above advertisements (of more than one years duration) are normally advertised as part of a composite advertisement in the Higher Education section of The Australian (Wednesday edition).

Level A vacancies and vacancies of less than one years duration (if advertised) may be placed as part of a composite advertisement in the Higher Education section of The Australian (Wednesday's edition), or as part of a composite advertisement in the higher education section of The Age (Saturday's edition). It is at the discretion of the school/faculty/administrative unit to determine the publication(s) in which the advertisement will appear.

Where applicants for academic vacancies are sought from outside academia, positions may be advertised in the relevant professional journal or section of the newspaper.

All costs for advertising, including agency production costs, will be charged to the cost centre specified on the Request to Advertise Form.

Please see the Recruitment Advertising Procedures for more information, guidelines and instructions for requesting employment advertising.
