Future Research Leaders' Program (FRLP)

Background

The Go8 universities coalition has developed a 'Future Research Leaders’ Program' (FRLP)to support the development of Australia's future research leaders.

At Monash the program is supported by the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and co-ordinated by Leadership and Management Development in Human Resources.

What is the aim?

This leadership program aims to provide comprehensive professional development.

  • to enhance the careers of research staff in Australian universities
  • to develop the next generation of Australian research leaders
  • to increase university success in research
  • to stimulate Australia’s research competitiveness

What does it cover?

Each module is comprised of online learning materials and activities tailored to Monash University, and supported by a face-to-face workshop.

In order to benefit fully from the program, participants are strongly encouraged to complete the online component before attending the workshop.

The FRLP modules introduce the supports available at Monash to assist researchers with the challenges of establishing and finalising research projects, financial management. commercialisation and technology transfer, governance, and audit requirements.

The workshops provide an overview of each topic, in addition to numerous resources both internal and external to the university, which are available to participants.

Who should attend?

As of 2010 the FRLP at Monash will target mid-career researchers who are three years post submission of their PhD.

Program Modules

Module 1 - Research Strategy and Planning

Participants will explore the initial stages of research project management, designing and costing the project, as well as operating within the broader research and political context.

Module 2 - Commencement and Collaboration

This module explores the nature of research grants and contracts. Participants will examine the principles of effective grant management and explore the researcher's responsibilities for the execution and reporting of project outcomes.

Module 7 - Managing and Leading People in a Research Context

This module outlines the requirements for managing members of a research team. Participants will examine people management issues and further explore the unique issues relevant to the research context, including fixed-term contracts.

Module 8 - Project Closeout

This module provides an efficient, structured approach to project closeout, to enable participants to meet client/sponsor reporting obligations. This interactive workshop uses a real-life case study to examine different stakeholder needs - those of the Funding Agency, the Research Institution as well as the Research Team. Participants will gain insights into each stakeholder's needs and how to maximise benefits for all parties. A project closeout template is developed for use with future projects.

When will it run?

All program modules will run twice in 2009.

Dates for 2010 will be available for registration in the coming months.
